Helen Humes, was a prolific porcelain artist and author of many books, patterns and videos on teaching the art of China Painting. China Painting or porcelain art is a fine art, unlike ceramics, and it is a very difficult medium due to the slick surface of the porcelain. Helen started studying in the mid-50’s in adult education and was very diligent in learning the technique. Due to her talent in this medium, within seven years she was teaching the class where she had first entered as a student. She excelled in teaching, and writing books, and was able to establish a school of china painting on the west coast in the summers with the help of her husband Ray. Her color work and designs were very well received in the porcelain world, and she continued to create and publish books, videos and DVD’s for many years. She painted, wrote, taught, and travelled all over the United States, Australia and New Zealand. This continued until her later years when due to failing health, she switched from porcelain art to water color. She enjoyed water color as well and produced beautiful gift cards and gift books for her many followers. Her love for the arts kept her going until she reached the age of 100. At that point her health took a serious down turn and she passed away six months later in March of 2018. Her legacy continues with her former business partner Alicia Handwerker in her Studio. Upon Helen's recent death, tributes came pouring in from all over the US from former students and friends. She will be greatly missed in the world of porcelain art and most especially by her family and friends. Helen always gave God the glory for her talent and many years of successful art.
